Artist Profiles > T > Thukral & Tagra
Thukral & Tagra blur the lines between fine art and popular culture, product placement and exhibition design, artistic inspiration and media hype. Their works comment on the globalisation of consumer culture and the repercussions of this as it is being experienced in India today. While both playful and humorous, their works express thoughtful questions about the nature of Indian identity as articulated by Indians themselves and projected by India to the rest of the world.
Tensions between digital and hand-guided techniques of art production were explored during their residency at STPI through the marriage of handicraft and technology, such as the combination of the organic qualities of handmade materials and the manual printing processes with customised digital components that enabled animation on paper.
Solo exhibitions include Games People Play, Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai (2015); Longing For Tomorrow – II, German Embassy, Delhi (2014); and Windows of Opportunity, Art Plural Gallery, Singapore (2013). They have had successful commissions by Conde Nast India, Ogilvy and Mather, Nokia, and Pepsi.
