BenCab: Impressions

Bencab is one of the Philippine’s most loved and collected living artists – known for the social relevance of his work and the quality of his draughtsmanship. The new works in this exhibition, a mix of vibrant monoprint etchings, woodcuts and paper pulp works, were created during Bencab’s residency as a Visiting Artist at STPI in mid 2005. The expressive and vivid works in the show follow the recurrent theme for which he has become famous – what it is to be Filipina. The show contrasts images of despair, poverty and servitude with dynamic images of man and woman.
Impressions is a visual feast of exploding colors and movement, an attribution to Bencab’s constant dedication to his craft and ingenuity, as well as the possibilities afforded by the technical support of the STPI. Not the type to be content to sit on his laurels, he continues to take risks and explores the limits of his artistic capabilities, keeping him in constant artistic fervor.
