Departures | New Releases: Yanyun Chen, Hong Zhu An, Prabhavathi Meppayil

13 April – 9 June

STPI is thrilled to be presenting a showcase of new releases from renowned artists Yanyun Chen, Hong Zhu An and Prabhavathi Meppayil, created during each artist’s residency with our Creative Workshop.

The collection of works reflects on each artists’ residency as a point of divergence from their usual practices, as they embark on a new journey of conceptual and material explorations in our Creative Workshop.

Curatorial Essay

“In journeys, one is always in the process of moving from one to another; a fitting way to think about how artistic practices are one of explorations.”

– Excerpt from “Excursions into Uncharted Fields”, a curatorial essay by Ho See Wah. Read the full essay here.

About the Artists

Yan Yun Chen

Yanyun Chen is a visual artist, and runs a drawing, new media and installation practice. Her works delve into the aesthetic, cultural and technological inheritances on one’s body, unravelling fictional and philosophical notions of embodiment, and are grounded in the physicality of human and botanical forms.

Hong Zhu An

Hong Zhu An’s body of work conveys a modern sensibility anchored in the richness of Chinese ink and paper history. His visual language can be  singles out its elements and gestures as central allies in his conception of the new.

Prabhavathi Meppayil

Prabhavathi Meppayil’s work is drawn from the sensitive abstraction of the practice of goldsmithing – her familial heritage. Her renewed use of particular materials invites notions of tradition, craft and modernist abstraction to converge on the same field of play.
