STPI presents three consecutive solo artistic presentations at our pop-up space, ArtSpace @ HeluTrans, under the umbrella of PRINT SCREEN. The first component of this pop-up will feature the print and paper works created through the artists’ residency with STPI. The second component is a screening room which will feature the artists’ films, or films that are related to their works.
The first edition features works by Alfredo & Isabel Aquilizan (b. Philippines, based in Australia), running from 13 August – 4 September 2022. With the Aquilizans, the artist duo translate elements of their evocative temporal installations into permanent material works. The humble cardboard material—symbolic of the balikbayan box, or “repatriate box” which overseas Filipinos use to send items back home—becomes a metaphor and a vessel for bittersweet expressions of love, a marker of presence and absence, and everyday histories that speak to human conditions of love and longing.
Each presentation is accompanied by a screening room, which will showcase their films, art performance documentation, complementary short and feature-length films, and more. The aim is to expand one’s understanding of the artists’ practice, through highlighting the domains which they are renowned for – community, performance, and filmic works.
By viewing the artworks in conjunction with the films for PRINT SCREEN, the audience can gather insights on how the artists’ practices at large informed their STPI residencies, as well as understand the key role of these works in furthering their artistic concerns, introducing a new dimension into their ways of artmaking.
